About this position
The Halin lab at ETH Zurich is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join a cutting-edge research project focused on the Glycobiology of Lymphatic Vessels. This project aims to elucidate how protein-bound carbohydrates, specifically core-1-derived O-glycans, shape the glycocalyx of lymphatic endothelial cells and influence their interactions with immune cells. The research will employ advanced techniques such as mass spectrometry, FACS, electrophoresis, and bioinformatics to characterize the glycocalyx and study immune cell migration and macrophage population establishment in lymph nodes.
The successful candidate will learn to work with mice, isolate lymph nodes for microscopy and primary cell culture, and investigate the mechanisms underlying changes in the lymphatic endothelial cell glycocalyx. The project involves both in vitro and tissue-based studies, including immunofluorescence and advanced microscopy, and will require presenting research findings to diverse audiences. The position is embedded within the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at ETH Zurich, offering a stimulating and supportive international research environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities and collaborations with teams at ETH Zurich, Harvard Medical School, and Yale University.
Applicants should have a Master's degree in Biology, Biomedicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field, and demonstrate curiosity, creativity, independence, and strong communication skills in English. The ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams is essential. The position is fully funded, with a competitive salary and excellent employment conditions as per ETH Zurich regulations. The start date is at the beginning of 2026, with some flexibility.
To apply, candidates must submit a motivation letter, CV, diploma transcripts, and contact details for two references via the ETH Zurich online job portal. Applications by email or post will not be considered. For questions about the position, contact PD Dr. Vivianne Otto at [email protected] (no applications via email).
