About this position
The University of Cologne, one of Europe's largest and oldest universities, invites applications for a PhD Candidate and Research Assistant position in the Professorship of Entrepreneurship and Management within the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences. The Chair focuses on empirical research in entrepreneurship, strategic management, and international management, offering a vibrant academic environment for students and researchers from around the world.
As a PhD candidate, you will engage in research projects related to entrepreneurship and management, including empirical studies and publication efforts in co-author teams. You will also participate in teaching, independently instructing classes and contributing to the conceptual development of entrepreneurship education for the faculty. The position provides the opportunity and expectation to pursue a doctoral qualification.
Applicants should possess a degree with distinction in economics, business administration, business informatics, or organizational/business psychology (or comparable programmes). Experience and interest in current entrepreneurship and management research topics—such as entrepreneurship and well-being, hybrid entrepreneurship, environmental innovations, and strategic/international alliances—are highly valued. Candidates should be willing to design and deliver seminars and lectures, supervise theses, and demonstrate strong interest in empirical research. Knowledge of quantitative methods and data analysis (e.g., Stata or SPSS) is highly desirable. Essential qualities include independence, resilience, motivation, flexibility, teamwork, curiosity, and a willingness to learn. Excellent written and spoken English skills are required.
The University offers high-quality academic training in a cooperative and efficient team, a diverse working environment with equal opportunities, support for balancing work and family life, occupational health management, flexible working time models, and the possibility to work remotely. The institution actively promotes equal opportunities and diversity, giving preferential consideration to women in accordance with the Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (LGG NRW), and welcomes applications from all suitable candidates regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation, or identity.
The position is full-time (39.83 hours per week), available from 1 August 2026, and is fixed-term until 31 July 2028. Salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the German public sector pay scale, subject to relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications.
To apply, submit your application online via the University of Cologne job portal, including proof of required qualifications (without a photo) and referencing Wiss2604-07. The application deadline is 14 June 2026. For further inquiries, contact Professor Dr Christian Schwens at [email protected].
