About this position
Ghent University invites applications for a PhD position focused on the reaction kinetics of lignin depolymerization. The project is based in the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Department EA11 - Materialen, Textiel en Chemische Proceskunde, and aims to elucidate the kinetics and mechanisms of ultra-fast, non-catalytic lignin depolymerization. Unlike conventional approaches, this process operates on extremely short time scales without catalysts, resulting in unique reaction pathways and product distributions. The research will involve designing and performing kinetic experiments, quantifying reaction rates and product formation, developing and validating a kinetic reaction model, and using this model to optimize reaction conditions for targeted product formation and improved process control.
The successful candidate will spend at least 90% of their assignment on academic research in preparation for a doctoral dissertation. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering Technology, or a closely related field. A strong interest in chemical reaction kinetics and mechanisms, especially in complex systems, is essential. Candidates should be interested in both experimental work and kinetic modeling, and have basic experience or a clear interest in kinetic experiments, data analysis, continuous flow reactor operation, and analytical techniques such as GPC, GC, and NMR. Experience with kinetic modeling and parameter estimation is an asset, and familiarity with modeling or data-analysis tools (MATLAB, Python, Aspen, gPROMS, or similar) is a plus. An affinity with bio-based, circular, or sustainable chemistry is desirable. Excellent command of English, both written and spoken, is required.
The position offers a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 4 years. Remuneration is determined by salary scale WM1, and all staff members enjoy benefits such as training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (for full-time positions), annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.
