About this position

The University of Agder (UiA) invites applications for a full-time PhD Research Fellow in Cybersecurity Management, based at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Information Systems, Campus Kristiansand, Norway. This three-year position (or four years with 25% career-promoting work) offers an exciting opportunity to conduct research at one of Norway’s largest information systems research groups, with over fifty research-active staff and a strong network of partners.

The PhD project will focus on bridging the gap between technical infrastructure and human behavior in cybersecurity management. Candidates are encouraged to submit a project proposal that investigates the interplay between information security and cyberspace security through a sociotechnical lens. Research themes may include human cybersecurity behavior, development and erosion of cybersecurity skills, cyber resilience, cyber deception, and the evolving nature of cybercrime. The role also welcomes exploration of how rapid developments in digital technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, impact cybersecurity practices, including both offensive tactics and defensive measures.

UiA provides an excellent environment for empirical research, with opportunities for collaboration with organizations such as Kartverket (the Norwegian Mapping Authority). Applicants are encouraged to adopt theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches best suited to their research interests, whether at the individual, organizational, or societal level. The successful candidate will contribute to scientific knowledge and outline broader societal implications of their findings.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree of 120 ECTS credits in Information Systems or a closely related area, with an average grade of B or higher. A scientifically original and academically strong project proposal is required, along with strong analytical skills and fluency in written and oral English. Desired qualifications include experience in scientific research, academic project work, publishing academic texts, teaching experience in higher education, and good pedagogical skills. Personal qualities sought are strong communication and critical thinking skills, proactivity, adaptability, open-mindedness, balance between results and social skills, ability to work independently and in teams, and motivation to contribute to a positive working environment.

The position is remunerated according to the State Salary Scale, salary plan 17.515, code 1017 PhD Research Fellow, with a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay. UiA offers professional development, a positive and inclusive working environment, modern facilities, and comprehensive welfare benefits.

Application is made electronically via the provided link. Required documentation includes an academic CV, cover letter, transcripts and diplomas, master’s thesis or abstract, academic works (up to 5), research proposal (max 5000 words), and names/contact information of two references. All documentation must be available in a Scandinavian language or English and submitted before the deadline of 15 June 2026. Short-listed applicants will be invited for interview, and background checks may be conducted with the applicant’s consent. For questions about the position, contact Professor Øystein Sæbø ([email protected]).

This opportunity is ideal for ambitious researchers seeking to advance the field of cybersecurity management in a dynamic and supportive academic environment.
