About this position

The GENIUS MSCA Doctoral Network at the University of Lille in France is offering two fully funded PhD positions dedicated to advancing the field of energy geostructures. Supported by the European Commission through the Horizon Europe Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions, the GENIUS network addresses the urgent global need for renewable-based, energy-efficient heating and cooling systems. With space heating and cooling accounting for about half of the world's final energy consumption and urbanization on the rise, innovative solutions are required to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Energy geostructures (EGs) are dual-purpose elements that provide both geothermal heat exchange and structural support for buildings, but their widespread adoption has been limited by gaps in expertise and technical knowledge.

GENIUS aims to bridge these gaps by developing advanced analysis and design tools for EGs and by enhancing scientific understanding of their integration with buildings, infrastructure, and other underground structures. Doctoral candidates will benefit from a comprehensive training program, including international and interdisciplinary research experiences, secondments to partner institutions (such as the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, AcessSOL Group, Gustave Eiffel University, Municipality of Lille, and University of Edinburgh), and personalized career development plans. The positions are fully funded for three years, covering tuition, a competitive salary (with living, mobility, and family allowances), and travel/conference budgets. Candidates will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and computing facilities at the University of Lille.

The main supervisor for both positions is Dr. Hussein Mroueh. Applicants must have a Master's degree in civil or geological engineering, demonstrate excellent English proficiency, and meet the MSCA mobility and eligibility rules. The application process is centralized via the University of Edinburgh, requiring submission of academic documents, a research proposal, CV, English certificate, and references.

The recruitment process is open, transparent, and merit-based, with interviews for shortlisted candidates. The intended start date is by September 2026, though some positions may require an earlier start. For more details and to apply, visit the GENIUS website.
