A fully funded PhD position is available at the University of Groningen, focusing on climate resilience in Maasai communities in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. The project, "Climate resilience in Africa: the role of ownership rights," investigates how gender-inclusive land ownership structures affect climate resilience and explores the transition from communal to private land management. The research is embedded in the Faculty of Economics and Business and supervised by Prof. Robert Lensink, Prof. Han Olff, and Dr Jedidah Simantoi Nankaya. The successful candidate will conduct primary data collection in Kenya, with support from Maasai Mara University. Applicants should have a strong background in Economics, Development Studies, or related fields, and be fluent in English and Swahili (Maasai language skills preferred). Funding

The position is fully funded for 4 years, with a gross monthly salary starting at €2,901 and increasing to a maximum of €3,707. Additional benefits include an 8% holiday allowance in May and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus in December. Research costs are covered. The appointment is full-time and temporary, with a positive assessment required after the first year. PhD candidates contribute 20% of their time to teaching in years 2-4.

Requirements
