About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a Doctoral Fellow position in the Department of Movement and Sports Sciences, as part of the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network, SUPER (Sustainable Sports and Physical Activity for Equity and Resilience). This pioneering network offers 17 fellowship opportunities at the intersection of sustainability, sports science, and public health, aiming to reshape physical activity and sports practices for equitable access and reduced environmental impact.

The selected doctoral candidate will focus on the project 'Physical activity promotion and climate action in aging and warming cities.' The research will explore how physical activity promotion for older adults can be adapted in the context of climate change and urban heat. Key tasks include performing an AI-supported literature review, examining the effects of varying weather and climate conditions on health outcomes in older adults, and evaluating the impact of heat on perceptions of physical activity through lab-based studies. The candidate will contribute to scientific publications, present findings at conferences, and participate in educational activities within the department and the SUPER consortium.

Ghent University is a leading institution with over 15,000 staff, offering state-of-the-art study programs and research opportunities across 11 faculties and 85 departments. The SUPER network provides secondment opportunities in industry and other European academic institutions, fostering transdisciplinary expertise bridging physical activity, sports, public and planetary health, circular economy, and sustainability.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Movement sciences, Health promotion, Rehabilitation sciences, or a related field. Eligibility requires not already holding a doctoral degree and not having resided or carried out main activity in Belgium for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to recruitment. Excellent English skills and minimum B1 Dutch proficiency are mandatory for communication and data collection with older adult participants. The position offers a full-time contract for up to 48 months, starting as early as September 1, 2026, with a salary at 100% of the net AAP member rate, tax-free grant, and comprehensive staff benefits including training, holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.

The application deadline is April 19, 2026. Applications must include a research statement, CV, certificates, transcripts, proof of language skills, evidence of publications or research work, and contact information for two referees. If the master's degree is not yet completed, confirmation of submission date is required. Ghent University encourages applications from all backgrounds, maintaining an equal opportunities and diversity policy. For further information, contact Professor Greet Cardon at [email protected]. Information sessions will be held on March 23, 2026, to provide additional details about the SUPER network and the application process.
