About this position

Ghent University, a leading European research institution, is offering a full-time doctoral fellowship in the Department of Biotechnology, focusing on sustainable water purification and phosphate removal. The successful candidate will join the TRASlab team, which is actively engaged in European projects related to bioproduction and water purification. The recently approved Water4All project EPHIC aims to develop innovative electrochemical processes for the sustainable removal of phosphate from wastewater and surface water, in collaboration with Cranfield University (UK), RWTH Aachen (Germany), and BETA center (Spain).

The doctoral research will be based at Ghent University and will involve process development, lab-based reactor research, and international collaboration. The position is designed to lead to a PhD degree and offers the opportunity to work closely with international partners, including potential short stays abroad. The earliest start date is January 1, 2026.

Applicants should hold a master's degree in bioscience engineering, engineering science, or an equivalent field by the appointment date. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to water technology and sustainability, possess practical laboratory skills for reactor setup and operation, and be capable of processing research data for publication. Fluency in English and effective communication with international collaborators are essential. The position requires a willingness to work in an international team and may involve short-term travel.

The fellowship is offered for an initial period of 12 months, renewable up to a maximum of 48 months upon positive evaluation. The funding package includes a salary equivalent to 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, determined by family status and seniority, and is tax-free. Ghent University provides a comprehensive benefits package, including training and education opportunities, 36 days of annual holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.

To apply, candidates should send their CV, a copy of their diploma (if available), and a motivation letter to [email protected] before the application deadline of December 6, 2025. Late applications will not be considered. For further information about the position, applicants may contact Professor Korneel Rabaey at [email protected]. Ghent University encourages applications from all qualified candidates as part of its commitment to equal opportunities and diversity.
