Åbo Akademi University, a leading research institution in Finland, is seeking applications for a full-time doctoral researcher in law as part of the Horizon Europe-funded UNCAN-Connect project. The position is based at the Department of Business and Economics, and Law, within the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences in Turku/Åbo, Finland. The initial appointment is for 36 months, with a possible extension of 18 months, and is expected to start as early as February 2026 and no later than April 2026.
The UNCAN-Connect project is a major European initiative aiming to revolutionize cancer research by developing a decentralized, collaborative platform for secure, ethical, and interoperable access to cancer data. The project involves 53 partner organizations across 19 countries and focuses on federated cancer data spaces and AI tools for data analysis. Åbo Akademi University's School of Law is responsible for evaluating the use of AI tools in cancer diagnostics from the perspective of Trustworthy AI (TAI) and developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for their use.
The doctoral researcher will conduct research primarily on Trustworthy AI from a legal standpoint, with opportunities to engage with related fields. Key responsibilities include collecting, analyzing, and managing information and data; collaborating with six use case partners; developing SOPs; communicating research findings; and producing scientific articles or a monographic dissertation. The role also involves contributing to teaching within the School of Law and collaborating with the international project consortium.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in law or a closely related field, with strong English language skills. Additional language skills in Swedish, Finnish, or other major EU languages are considered an asset. Candidates should demonstrate a solid understanding of legal frameworks governing data protection, automated decision-making, AI regulation, and interoperability. Technical skills in software design, medical data handling, and AI concepts are appreciated but not mandatory. Soft skills such as critical thinking, time management, collaboration, and problem-solving are highly valued.
The position offers a competitive salary starting at approximately 2,600 € per month, with increases as the candidate progresses in their doctoral studies. Employment is governed by the general collective agreement for Finnish universities, and the role is full-time with annual evaluation of the individual study plan. The position is open to candidates who have not yet been admitted to the doctoral programme at Åbo Akademi University, provided they meet the eligibility requirements during the application process.
To apply, candidates must submit an electronic application by 13 January 2026, including a free-form application letter, a description of research interests and previous work, a research plan for the doctoral dissertation, a CV (with publication list), and copies of diplomas and transcripts. Detailed application instructions are available on the university website. For further information, applicants may contact Professor Markku Suksi or Senior Lecturer Magnus Westerlund.
