About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in the characterization of large-scale quantum computers. The successful candidate will join the Division of Applied Quantum Physics at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, working within the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT)—a major Swedish initiative to advance quantum technology and build a national quantum computer. The research environment is vibrant, international, and offers direct access to world-class nanofabrication facilities and interdisciplinary collaboration with theorists, experimentalists, and engineers.
The project aims to develop innovative methods for the characterization of quantum computers with up to 100 superconducting qubits. As full characterization at this scale is infeasible, the research will focus on approximate, selective, and partial tomography of quantum states and processes, as well as strategies for inferring key model parameters such as coupling strengths and noise levels from measurement data. The work will be closely connected to theoretical modelling, device design, and experimental efforts within the WACQT team, which currently comprises around 100 members.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field. For international candidates, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree is accepted. Strong English communication skills and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or C are required. Experience in quantum computing, quantum state/process/measurement tomography, or benchmarking quantum systems is highly desirable. The position values collaborative and independent work, self-motivation, attention to detail, and analytical problem-solving abilities.
The doctoral position is fully funded for four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, extending the appointment to five years. The starting salary is 34,550 SEK per month (as of May 25, 2025), and doctoral students at Chalmers are considered employees with full benefits. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inclusive working environment, with support for gender equality and diversity, and Swedish language courses for non-native speakers.
To apply, prepare your documents in English (PDF format, max 40 MB each), including your CV, personal letter, motivation, and transcripts. Use the online application form provided; incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. The application deadline is March 8, 2026. For further information, contact Associate Professor Anton Frisk Kockum at [email protected].
This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge quantum computing research in a collaborative, multidisciplinary setting at one of Europe’s leading technical universities.
