About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Human-Robot Interaction. This exciting research opportunity is based in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, a joint department of Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg, renowned for its internationally visible research and strong industry links. The division of Interaction Design and Software Engineering provides a collaborative environment where you will join a growing group of researchers focused on trustworthy and critical robotics, with access to well-equipped labs and a diverse range of robots.

The research project addresses the challenge of effective robot communication in human spaces. Whether robots are assisting older adults, delivering goods, supporting education, or navigating public environments, their ability to signal intentions clearly is crucial for coordination, trust, and safety. The PhD project aims to develop a novel, universal framework for robot communication that is platform-independent and context-adaptive, establishing principled foundations for how robots can communicate across different environments and contexts.

This interdisciplinary project combines theory-driven research with empirical investigation, including data collection in real-world settings, controlled user studies, and the development of new theoretical models of human-robot communication. The candidate will be supervised by experts in Linguistics and Human-Robot Interaction and will collaborate closely with a postdoctoral researcher responsible for technical implementation on robotic platforms.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Linguistics, Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Computer Science, Robotics, Cognitive Science, or related fields. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required, along with demonstrated interest in human communication or human-technology interaction. Experience in qualitative data analysis, user studies, programming, interdisciplinary environments, linguistics (pragmatics, semantics, conversation analysis), field research, and familiarity with AI technologies (machine learning, large language models) are advantageous.

The position is fully funded from the start, with a starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025). The appointment is fixed-term for four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which can extend the position up to five years. Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. The earliest starting date is 1st June 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

As a doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits, including a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg. Chalmers is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, offering Swedish courses for non-native speakers and a range of employee benefits. The university fosters innovation and entrepreneurship, with a strong focus on scientific excellence and sustainability.

To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files (CV, personal letter, motivation, thesis, transcripts) via the online application form. Incomplete or emailed applications will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is 17th April 2026. For questions, contact Assistant Professor Ilaria Torre at [email protected].
