About this position
The KTH Royal Institute of Technology invites applications for a doctoral student position in Nuclear Power Safety, located in Stockholm, Sweden. This opportunity is situated within the Division of Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE), specifically the Nuclear Power Safety group, which conducts advanced research on accident phenomena relevant to both current and future nuclear reactors. The group is internationally recognized for its work in safety analysis, including design basis and severe accident analysis for nuclear power plants.
The doctoral project focuses on frontier research regarding melt-structure interactions during severe accidents in light water reactors, with an emphasis on ex-vessel corium risk analysis. The successful candidate will perform both experimental and analytical studies, as well as safety analyses using simulation tools such as U.S. NRC codes. The research is supported by funding from the APRI-12 program and SSM projects, ensuring a fully funded position with a monthly salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement.
Supervision will be provided by Professor Weimin Ma, with additional contacts including Professor Mattias Blennow and Professor Jens Bardarson. The position offers a creative and dynamic environment, attractive benefits, and the opportunity to contribute to international collaborations in nuclear safety research.
Eligibility requires a Master’s degree in nuclear engineering or mechanical engineering, or equivalent academic qualifications (at least 240 higher education credits, including 60 second-cycle credits). Applicants must demonstrate eligibility for utilization of U.S. NRC codes and possess English proficiency equivalent to English B/6. Selection criteria include the ability to work independently and collaboratively, professional approach, analytical skills, and perseverance. Personal skills are highly valued.
The position is full-time and temporary, with employment initially for one year and possible renewal up to four years for completion of the doctoral degree. Doctoral students are entitled to a workplace with many employee benefits. Security clearance may be required for certain roles, in accordance with Swedish law.
To apply, candidates must submit a CV, application letter (max 2 pages), certified copies of diplomas and grades, proof of language requirements, and representative publications or technical reports. Applications must be submitted via KTH’s recruitment system by the deadline of March 16, 2026.
