A fully-funded PhD studentship is available in the Department of Chemistry at The University of Manchester, focusing on the study of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their applications in mitigating ammonia (NH3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions. The project leverages the EPSRC UK National Facility for EPR spectroscopy, offering exceptional training and research opportunities in a world-class environment.
MOFs are crystalline porous materials composed of metal clusters and organic linkers, renowned for their ability to adsorb, retain, and neutralise air pollutants such as NO2, NH3, and SO2. The research aims to design and investigate new MOFs with highly rigid, chelating linkers to ensure high material stability, especially after multiple adsorption–desorption cycles. Building on recent advances at Manchester, the project will use EPR spectroscopy to examine the reactivity of MOFs against ammonia and nitrogen oxides, providing insights into metal sites, redox transformations, and host-guest interactions at the MOF surface.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant team of EPR and MOF experts, receiving comprehensive training in EPR, NMR, XRD, XPS, and TEM techniques. The PhD programme also includes strong career development elements, such as science communication skills through group meetings and presentations at national and international conferences.
Applicants should have or expect to achieve at least a 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry or a related discipline. International candidates are welcome, and flexible study arrangements (including part-time options) may be considered. The position is fully funded, covering home tuition fees and a tax-free stipend starting at £21,805 per annum (2026-2027), increasing annually, for up to 3.5 years.
