About this position
The MathPower group at the University of Calgary, led by Dr. Zhirui Liang, is recruiting multiple fully funded Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers for Fall 2026. The positions are available through the Ph.D. in Mathematics and Statistics or Ph.D. in Geoscience programs, with postdoc opportunities via the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) fellowship. The group focuses on rigorous mathematical models, data-driven methods, and trustworthy AI algorithms to support the integration of variable renewable energy and surge electricity demand, improving reliability, efficiency, and transparency of power and energy systems. Research themes include optimization, game theory, machine learning, power system engineering, and energy economics.
Current research topics cover power/energy systems under uncertainty, strategic human behavior, decision-support tools for system planners and market operators, optimization and control of distributed energy resources, and data center–grid coordination for energy-efficient computing. The group collaborates with national laboratories, universities, and industry partners across North America, offering students opportunities to present at top journals and conferences and engage in cross-disciplinary research.
Applicants should have a master's degree in a relevant field (mathematics, statistics, operations research, electrical engineering, computer science, data science, geoscience, environmental or industrial engineering), strong mathematical modeling, optimization, or machine learning skills, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Julia, or MATLAB. Funding includes full tuition and stipend, with postdoc candidates eligible for the PIMS fellowship.
To apply, email Dr. Liang at [email protected] with your CV, transcript, and a brief statement of research experience and interests. The University of Calgary is a leading Canadian institution, offering a vibrant research environment and excellent quality of life in Calgary, Alberta.
