Fully-funded PhD Position in Evolutionary Biology (Behavioral Ecology, Evolution) University of Bern in Switzerland

The University of Bern, in collaboration with Eawag and supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation, is offering a fully-funded PhD position in Evolutionary Biology. The research focuses on understanding how social plasticity shapes adaptation to novel environments, specifically investigating the coevolution of social behavior and morphology in three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) populations following their colonization of a large freshwater lake system in southern Greenland.

The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Jordan Martin and Dr. Katie Peichel (University of Bern) and Dr. Blake Matthews (Eawag) over four years. The project involves both fieldwork in Greenland and laboratory experiments in Switzerland, with tasks including intensive data collection (morphology, behavior, DNA), animal care, and leading a common garden experiment. The position offers a balance of rigorous scientific research and adventure, with three summer seasons at a beautiful field site, a large and supportive lab group, and opportunities for hands-on mentorship and engagement with a diverse scientific community.

Applicants should have a strong background in behavioral ecology and a Master's degree in biology (evolution, ecology). Experience in field and/or laboratory behavioral experiments is required, along with an independent, adventurous, conscientious, and cooperative personality. Desirable skills include familiarity with R and Bayesian statistics, interest in automated coding techniques, research experience in evolutionary genetics, morphometrics, or social evolution, prior work with fish or in aquatic habitats, and a love of animals and the outdoors.
