About this position
The aerospace industry is continually striving to develop lighter and more efficient structures to reduce fuel consumption and increase payload capacity. This PhD research project at Kingston University addresses this challenge by pioneering a methodology that integrates generative design with advanced additive manufacturing (AM) to create ultra-lightweight aerospace components. The project draws inspiration from nature’s most efficient cellular structures, such as the trabecular architecture of bone and the silicate skeletons of radiolaria, to engineer functionally superior parts optimized for specific performance criteria.
Unlike traditional biomimicry, this research aims to abstract and apply the underlying design principles found in biological systems—such as cell size gradation, strut connectivity, and anisotropic topology—into a robust engineering framework. The workflow will leverage generative design software, potentially utilizing machine learning tools, to translate these principles into manufacturable designs. The central focus is on the fundamental link between biological concepts and the final manufactured product, rather than the development of new machine learning algorithms.
Successful candidates will join the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and the Environment, working under the supervision of Dr P Khazaeinejad. The project offers the opportunity to contribute to the next generation of aerospace components that are not only significantly lighter but also possess tailored structural integrity.
