About this position
The raw materials obtained from recycling of various materials particularly from e-waste have significant value in enhancing recycling and approaches towards sustainability. Electrical waste has been identified as one of the fastest growing components of what is disposed of daily. With the global demand for critical materials increasing and reflected in the ever-increasing price for such metals, there is an urgency to increase our recovery rates.
Automation and Artificial Intelligence are two underlying technologies which can provide the backbone to providing an intelligent solution to both 1) increase recovery rates and 2) ensure accurate separation of materials. This project will involve development of intelligent automated systems including advanced robotic systems and sensors which allows identification, categorisation, characterisation and separation in various stages of the recycling. The system aims to transform e-waste sorting processes, enhance efficiency, and maximise resource recovery.
This project will be based at the University of Birmingham with significant interaction with the project partners and international industries. Our laboratory are well equipped with extensive instrumentation, Robots and computing facilities, offering a vibrant, multidisciplinary, and multicultural working environment.
You will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person who meets the academic requirements for enrolment in the PhD degree at The University of Birmingham. You will hold, or be expected to achieve, a master’s degree or a four-year undergraduate degree at a 2:1 level (or above) in a relevant subject, e.g. Mechanical Engineering, robotics or a related field. You will have an enquiring, rigorous, hands-on research approach, strong intellect, and disciplined work habits. Interest in experimental work and development is essential, as are good team-working, observational and communication skills.
Suitable candidates must complete an electronic application form at the University of Birmingham. Interested applicants should send an up-to-date curriculum vitae and for further details – contact Prof Butler on [email protected] or Dr Hajiyavand on [email protected] .
