About this position

Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon in Geesthacht, Germany, is offering a fully funded PhD position in Materials Engineering as part of the EU MSCA Print4Life doctoral network. The research focuses on the mechanistic study of high corrosion susceptibility in additively manufactured biodegradable magnesium and zinc alloys, with the PhD degree awarded by Kiel University. The project aims to unravel the origins of elevated corrosion rates in AM-built Mg and Zn alloys, using advanced techniques such as in situ SEM/TEM, EBSD, X-ray tomography, and SKPFM.

Collaboration is planned with Uppsala University (Sweden) and Hydrumedical (Portugal), including research stays. Applicants must have a relevant master's degree and experience in materials science or related fields, with strong English skills and preferably experience in electron microscopy, corrosion characterization, and additive manufacturing. The position is funded for 36 months under Marie Curie regulations, with a competitive salary and allowances.

Applications must be submitted in English by 31 December 2025, including a cover letter, CV, degree certificates, thesis/publications, and references. The Print4Life network provides advanced research training in additive manufacturing of biomaterials and tissues, with 17 doctoral students across 8 host institutions.
