About this position

The University of Georgia is seeking a motivated MS student for a Graduate Research Assistantship focused on alligator population monitoring and modeling in Georgia. This project, in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GA DNR), aims to develop and implement research plans to monitor alligator populations, inform management strategies, and address resource limitations. The research will build on ongoing efforts to estimate population sizes, simulate harvest management, and apply value of information methods to evaluate uncertainties. There is potential for a field-based component, including satellite tagging of alligators.

The selected student will work closely with UGA/Coop Unit staff, GA DNR managers and biologists, and other researchers in Georgia and the southeastern US. Supervision will be provided by Dr. Kelly Robinson (Associate Professor - Assistant Unit Leader) and Dr. Richard Chandler at the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. The position offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience in wildlife conservation, decision analysis, and population modeling, with strong engagement with management agencies and the research community.

Applicants should have a B.S. in Ecology, Natural Resources, Statistics, or a related field. Preferred qualifications include experience with data management, quantitative methods, proficiency in R, and interest in decision analytic methods such as structured decision making and experimental design. Strong networking, social skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are valued. Prior field experience with alligators is a plus but not required.

The assistantship provides a salary of approximately $30,365 per year, full tuition waiver, and benefits. To apply, send a single email to Dr. Kelly Robinson ([email protected]) with a cover letter (1-page max), academic CV, unofficial transcripts, and contact information for three professional references. The position is open until filled, with a preferred start date of August 2026.
