The Nekton Research Laboratory at the University of New Orleans is seeking a graduate student for an MS position in Fish Ecology, starting in Fall 2026. The successful applicant will join a dynamic research group focused on topics such as assessing native fish responses to aquatic invasive species, surveying for invasive fishes, and measuring levels of microplastics in estuarine fishes. Research will be conducted in both freshwater and estuarine habitats, providing a broad range of field and laboratory experiences.

This position is supported by a 9-month Teaching Assistantship, which includes a $16,000 stipend and a waiver of tuition and out-of-state fees. The Teaching Assistant will be responsible for teaching three sections of EES 1003 Introduction to Environmental Science each semester, gaining valuable teaching experience alongside research training.

Applicants must hold at least a B.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences, Fishery Sciences, or a related field. Required skills include experience with fish identification, field sampling, and statistical analyses. Completion of the GRE is necessary, and preference will be given to candidates with a combined verbal and quantitative score of at least 300.
