About this position

Chalmers University of Technology, in collaboration with the University of Gothenburg, invites applications for nine fully funded doctoral student positions at the Department of Mathematical Sciences. As Sweden’s largest mathematics department, the Department of Mathematical Sciences is renowned for its excellence in both pure and applied mathematics, mathematical statistics, and interdisciplinary research. The department is organized into three divisions: Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics, offering a vibrant and collaborative research environment with around 200 employees.

Research areas for these positions span a wide spectrum, including algebra, geometry, analysis, probability theory, applied mathematics, statistics, number theory, computational mathematics, mathematical general relativity, geometric hydrodynamics, discrete optimization, computational complexity, cancer bioinformatics, and AI-driven 3D city modelling. The department fosters a creative and inclusive atmosphere, with regular international exchanges and a commitment to diversity and gender equality, exemplified by initiatives such as GENIE.

Doctoral students at Chalmers are employed by the university and receive a competitive starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (as of May 25, 2025), along with comprehensive employee benefits. The standard contract is four years, with the possibility to extend to five years if up to 20% teaching is undertaken. Chalmers provides Swedish language courses for non-native speakers to support integration into the local community.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree or equivalent in mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics, or a closely related discipline. English proficiency is typically demonstrated through a master’s thesis or similar academic work; TOEFL/IELTS is not required. Specific requirements for each position are detailed in the individual announcements. Chalmers values diversity and inclusion, and encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply.

The application deadline for all positions is February 23, 2026. Interested candidates should apply online via the Chalmers application portal. Multiple applications are permitted if you are interested in more than one position. No applications via email will be accepted, and an acceptance letter from a supervisor is not required. For further information, contact Irina Pettersson (Associate Professor, Applied Mathematics and Statistics), Jakob Björnberg (Senior Lecturer, Analysis and Probability Theory), or Daniel Persson (Professor, Algebra and Geometry).
