About this position

The Propulsion and Clean Energy Research Group at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is seeking one M.A.Sc. student (domestic applicants only) and one Ph.D. student (open to both domestic and international applicants) to join their team starting September 2026. The group, led by Associate Professor Emre Karatas, focuses on emissions reduction in gas turbine engines and carbonaceous materials, with a strong emphasis on hands-on experimental work using state-of-the-art combustion and propulsion facilities at TMU.

Research in the group addresses critical challenges in energy and transportation sectors, including the reduction of particulate matter emissions from combustion systems and the development of hybrid-electric propulsion systems to decrease aviation's dependence on fossil fuels. The group collaborates with both academic and industry stakeholders to improve the sustainability of these sectors. Key research areas include propulsion, combustion, fluid mechanics, clean energy, and hybrid-electric propulsion, with the goal of generating a fundamental understanding of soot formation and reducing emissions.

Applicants should have a strong academic background in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics, with a cumulative GPA above 3.6. Candidates are expected to demonstrate clear research motivation, strong technical writing skills, and an interest in experimental research. Experience with Matlab or Python for image or data processing is an asset. The M.A.Sc. position is restricted to domestic applicants, while the Ph.D. position is open to both domestic and international candidates.

Successful candidates will receive a tuition waiver and a competitive stipend, in accordance with university guidelines. The application process requires submission of a CV, unofficial transcripts, a brief statement of research interests, a list of publications (if applicable), and GRE scores (if available) via email to [email protected]. More information about the research group and its activities can be found on the group’s academic page.

Students with interests in propulsion, combustion, fluid mechanics, and clean energy are especially encouraged to apply. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to impactful research in a dynamic and collaborative environment at Toronto Metropolitan University.
