The Department of Computer Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is offering a PhD fellowship in Human-AI Interaction and Learning, as part of the newly established AI Centre for the Empowerment of Human Learning (AI LEARN). NTNU is Norway’s leading academic IT environment, with a strong technical-scientific profile and a commitment to professional education and research. The AI LEARN centre is one of six national research centers for Artificial Intelligence launching in 2025, aiming to foster interdisciplinary collaboration to address societal challenges, understand AI’s impact, and drive innovation. The centre’s mission is to advance foundational research, responsible innovation, robust governance, and capacity building in human-centred AI.

This PhD position is associated with the Hybrid Intelligence cluster, focusing on how human-AI interaction and collaboration evolve in contemporary AI environments, including Generative AI and multi-agent ecosystems. The research approach integrates Design-Based Research (DBR) and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) principles. The PhD fellow will design and evaluate user-centred AI artifacts that support creativity, problem solving, and knowledge co-creation, and will conduct extensive case studies with partners in schools and public/private sectors. Key research topics include how humans interact with automatically generated content, co-work with AI to analyze large reports, and collaborate to develop hybrid feedback.

The project also addresses integration and contextualisation of content, trust, and synergistic creation of new content with AI. Duties include literature review, participatory design workshops, service and interface implementation, case study planning and execution, empirical data analysis, report and article writing, conference attendance, and dissemination activities within the centre. Applicants must have a relevant Master’s degree (Computer Science or equivalent, with focus on learning technologies, AI in education, interaction design, HCI, or human-AI collaboration), strong academic background (B or better), and solid knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods. Good written and oral English skills are required, with specific minimum scores for TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge exams.

Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish language skills at level A2 are required or must be acquired during employment. Preferred qualifications include research assistant experience, relevant publications, and presentation skills in Norwegian/Scandinavian. The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, favorable pension terms, working capital, free Norwegian language training, and access to employee benefits.
