The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD position focused on the modelling of electrochemical gas evolution in electrolysis processes, specifically related to aluminium production via the Hall-Héroult process. The successful candidate will be integrated into the FME ZeMe research group, collaborating with other PhD candidates, industry professionals, and academic researchers.
Supervision will be provided by Professor Ann Mari Svensson (NTNU), with co-supervision from Senior Researcher Kristian E. Einarsrud and Researcher Kurian J. Vachaparambil (SINTEF). Eligibility: Applicants must hold a master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field, equivalent to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at the master’s level. Master students may apply if they complete their degree before starting. A strong academic record (average grade B or better on the NTNU scale) and proficiency in English are required. Candidates should have a solid theoretical background in electrochemistry, experience in mathematical modelling (especially numerical solutions of partial differential equations), and skills in relevant programming languages/tools (Python, C, Matlab, OpenFOAM). Preferred qualifications include experience with numerical modelling, knowledge of aluminium production processes, and scientific writing.
Funding: The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. The employment period is three years, and the position is conditional on external funding. Additional benefits include membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, free basic Norwegian language training, and access to NTNU’s employee benefits.
