About this position

The University of Vienna is seeking a PhD candidate to join the Faculty of Life Sciences, specifically in the Group of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Thomas Hummel at the Department of Neuroscience and Developmental Biology. The research group focuses on the analysis of neuronal networks in the Drosophila brain, offering a collaborative environment with postdocs, pre-docs, master students, and administrative staff who share a passion for understanding nervous system function. The successful candidate will be embedded in the Vienna Doctoral School in Cognition, Behaviour and Neuroscience (VDS CoBeNe), which emphasizes quality assurance in PhD training and promotes interdisciplinary knowledge exchange. Responsibilities include planning and executing empirical studies, publishing research results in international journals, presenting findings at conferences, participating in new research project acquisition, and contributing to group administration and teaching. The candidate will conduct research related to neuronal networks in Drosophila, work on their dissertation, engage in teaching, help organize academic events, and collaborate with international experts in trauma and traumatic sequelae. Applicants must hold a Master's or Diploma degree in biology and have experience in scientific writing, molecular-genetic research methods, didactic skills, strong IT proficiency (including MS Office and Photoshop), high-resolution confocal imaging, basic programming skills, and excellent knowledge of Drosophila genetics. The position offers a supportive, international academic environment, flexible working hours, remote/hybrid options, access to over 600 free internal training courses, and a fair salary starting at EUR 3714.80 (full-time, paid 14 times a year), with increases for credited experience. The contract is for 4 years, initially limited to 1.5 years with automatic extension unless a non-extension declaration is made within the first 12 months. The University of Vienna is committed to equal opportunities, diversity, and the advancement of women, with preference given to female candidates in case of equal qualifications. The workplace is centrally located in Vienna with good public transport connections. The application deadline is October 26, 2025. Interested candidates should submit their CV, letter of intent, summary of research interests or dissertation concept (max. 2 pages), and degree certificates via the University of Vienna job portal.
