About this position

This PhD Fellowship position in Development Studies is offered by the Department of International Studies and Interpreting at Oslo Metropolitan University in Norway. The position is a three-year fixed-term appointment, with the possibility of an additional year for teaching and administrative duties, and is vacant from September 1, 2026. The Section for Development Studies provides a vibrant academic environment, focusing on global challenges, particularly those affecting the Global South.

Research areas include development, environment and sustainability, education's role in development, global resource distribution, health, gender, religion, power structures, and social inequality. As a PhD Research Fellow, you will join an internationally oriented group, participate in the research group 'Development, Power and Inequality,' and be enrolled in the faculty's PhD programme in Educational Sciences for Teacher Education. The position emphasizes critical reflection, social relevance, and ethical awareness. You will develop and carry out an independent research project aligned with the section’s teaching and research focus.

Academic supervision and opportunities for research stays abroad are available. The salary is NOK 550,800 per year, with a mandatory 2% pension contribution. Applicants must have a master’s degree (120 ECTS credits) in Development Studies or a related field, with a strong academic record (B or better on the thesis, or equivalent).

Experience with fieldwork, regional competence in the Global South or Norway, and interdisciplinary research are desirable. Applicants must submit a project proposal (max 10 pages) in a Scandinavian language or English, demonstrating background knowledge and alignment with the programme’s focus. The project proposal must follow the PhD programme template and be written in a Scandinavian language or English (max 10 pages).
