Fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Strathclyde: 'Understanding Interactions of Keystone Microbial Species in the Oral Cavity using Optical Imaging.' This interdisciplinary project focuses on exploring the interactions of keystone microbial species within the oral cavity, investigating how microbes and the host interact within complex biofilm models of oral disease. The research aims to improve oral health and develop next-generation therapeutic strategies by understanding microbial networks.
The PhD will utilize advanced imaging techniques, including optical microscopy and innovative mesoscale imaging with the Mesolens, a unique technology developed at Strathclyde. The student will engineer bacterial species to express fluorescent markers or use existing labelling strategies such as CLASI-FISH, applying world-class imaging to visualize biofilm structure. The project also involves developing image methodologies to observe and measure the penetration and performance of active formulations designed to disrupt pathogenic communities.
This studentship is jointly funded by Haleon and the University of Strathclyde, with the student working across the Universities of Strathclyde and Glasgow in the labs of Professor Gail McConnell, Dr Suzie Humphrey, and Dr Liam Rooney. There are opportunities to work on-site at Haleon (Weybridge, UK). The studentship covers four years of UK tuition fees and a stipend at UKRI rates (£20,780 per year for 2025/26). International applicants are welcome but must fund the difference between UK and overseas fees (£18,644 per year for 2025/26). Visa, NHS charges, and travel costs are not covered.
Applicants should have or expect to achieve at least a 2:1 BSc (Hons) degree or equivalent in microbiology, infection biology, molecular biology, or a closely related life science field. A strong interest in microbial pathogens, imaging, and host–microbe interactions is essential. Training will be provided in microbiology, imaging, data analysis, and biofilm model development.
