About this position

The Bioprocess Science and Engineering (BSE) group at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Chemical Engineering department is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join a cutting-edge project focused on enzyme kinetics and stability under industrial process conditions. Embedded within the PROSYS research center, the group is renowned for developing innovative laboratory-scale methods and equipment to study enzyme behavior, with a particular emphasis on oxidative enzymes as sustainable catalysts for industrial synthesis.

This PhD position is part of the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) doctoral network ELEGANCE, which integrates machine learning and multi-parametric design for enzymes and bioprocesses. The successful candidate will work on the expression, characterization, and application of enzymes sourced from the University of Turin and other partner laboratories. Key research activities include testing enzyme stability in specialized gas-liquid interface apparatus and reactors, collecting and analyzing experimental data, developing predictive models for enzyme stability, and refining algorithms to enhance process predictability across different reactor types.

Responsibilities encompass combining enzyme and process engineering with advanced modelling, participating in MSCA ELEGANCE training events, workshops, and secondments, collaborating within the BSE group and broader networks, publishing research in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at international conferences, and engaging in public outreach. The candidate will also have opportunities to teach and supervise MSc and BSc students and research assistants.

Applicants should hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent in biotechnology, (bio)chemical engineering, or a related field. Strong English proficiency, analytical skills, independence, and excellent communication abilities are essential. Experience in converting experimental data into functional models is required, and an interest in computational methods for enzyme analysis is advantageous.

DTU offers a dynamic, international research environment with a commitment to academic excellence, collegial respect, and scientific innovation. The PhD appointment is for three years, with a competitive salary based on the Marie S. Curie compensation scheme, including pension contributions and potential family allowance. The preferred start date is 1 June 2026, or as agreed.

Applications must be submitted online by 21 January 2026, including a cover letter, CV, transcripts, and diplomas in English as a single PDF. For further details, contact Professor John Woodley at [email protected]. Explore more about the MSCA ELEGANCE network at elegance.dtu.dk and DTU Chemical Engineering at kt.dtu.dk. Apply via the official portal: Application Link.

DTU is committed to diversity and inclusion, welcoming candidates regardless of age, gender, disability, race, religion, or ethnic background. The university conducts open-source background checks for research in critical technology. Join DTU and contribute to world-class research addressing global challenges and advancing sustainable technology for society.

Excellent English proficiency in written and oral form is required. Candidates should possess strong analytical skills, the ability to work independently, and excellent communication and social skills for interdisciplinary teamwork. Experience in converting experimental data into functioning models is essential. Interest in advanced computational methods to improve and understand enzymes is preferred but not mandatory. Applications may be submitted prior to obtaining the master's degree, but candidates cannot begin before having received it.

How to apply
