Description

Join the Division of Communications Engineering at Lund University for an exciting PhD opportunity in joint communications and control. The position is based at the Department of Electrical and Information Technology, Faculty of Engineering (LTH), and focuses on developing theory and algorithms for goal-oriented, semantics-aware communication in autonomous systems. The research will address efficient, intelligent, and adaptive information exchange in multi-agent and multi-vehicular systems, with a particular emphasis on multi-hop wireless communication. The project is funded by ELLIIT, a strategic research environment supported by the Swedish government, and offers collaboration with Linköping University, including opportunities for research visits. The division is renowned for its work in wireless communication, communication theory, channel modeling, and control and estimation over wireless networks. You will join a vibrant team of 13 senior researchers and around 20 doctoral students. As a doctoral student, you will be both a student and an employee at Lund University, receiving training in scientific methods, critical thinking, and research ethics. The research will involve mathematical modeling, theory development, algorithm implementation, simulations, and potentially physical experiments. Key topics include Age of Information (AoI), optimization, reinforcement learning, distributed control, and wireless communication systems at both the physical and network layers. Applicants must have a relevant Master's degree or equivalent, with strong mathematical skills, experience in scientific programming, and knowledge of wireless communication, distributed optimization, and reinforcement learning. Excellent English communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential. The position is fully funded, with a monthly salary and benefits, and is a four-year full-time appointment, extendable with departmental duties. To apply, submit your application in English via the Lund University job portal, including a CV, cover letter, degree certificates, transcripts, and any other supporting documents. The deadline for applications is January 7, 2026. For more information, contact Senior Lecturer Johan Thunberg at [email protected]. Keywords: joint communication and control, wireless communication, multi-agent systems, multi-vehicular systems, mathematical modelling, optimization, reinforcement learning, Electrical Engineering, algorithm development, distributed control.

Funding

The position is a full-time, fixed-term employment as a doctoral student at Lund University, with a monthly salary. The project is funded by ELLIIT, a strategic research environment funded by the Swedish government. Employment includes benefits such as generous annual leave and occupational pension. The position is for four years, extendable with departmental duties.
