About this position

The Advanced Networking Lab at the Center for Wireless Technology Eindhoven (CWTe), part of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, offers several PhD positions focused on resilient wireless communications for mission critical applications, particularly in aerospace. The research is at the cutting edge of wireless communications and networking for 6G, targeting ultra-reliable low latency communications, resource allocation, digital twins, Open RAN for 6G networks, distributed massive MIMO, and flexible compute continuum for open architectures. The lab is actively involved in European and Dutch government-funded R&D projects, including RHIADA and Aviation in Transition (LiT), aiming to replace wired avionic networks with advanced wireless systems for weight reduction, flexibility, and improved maintenance.

PhD candidates will investigate techniques to guarantee high reliability in private wireless network deployments under harsh environmental conditions. Research will focus on developing novel approaches for safe and resilient wireless avionics intra-communication (WAIC) networks using cell-free massive MIMO, ensuring robustness against interference, failures, and attacks, while meeting stringent latency constraints. Candidates are expected to develop new methods to detect, localize, analyze, and predict connectivity disruptions and attacks, leveraging AI/ML techniques, and validate these through simulations and experiments.

The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including an OpenRAN-compliant 5G testbed, commercial radio units, software-defined radios, a shielded metal room for sensitive electronics, a 28 m2 anechoic chamber (500MHz-40GHz), a system integration lab, and a 16-channel distributed MIMO testbed (sub-6 GHz). The positions are funded by the Dutch National Growth Fund project “Aviation in Transition (LiT)” in collaboration with the Dutch aerospace industry and research organizations.

Applicants must have a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Applied Physics, or a related field, with excellent grades. A strong background in wireless and mobile communications, including wireless propagation, network architectures, and cell-free MIMO techniques, is required. Experience with software and hardware tools such as Open-air interface/srsRAN, NS3, and software defined radios is appreciated. Candidates should possess analytic skills, creative and critical thinking, intrinsic motivation, and the ability to collaborate with partners. Fluent spoken and written English at C1 level is mandatory.

Employment is full-time for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. The position includes teaching tasks (minimum 10% of employment), salary scale P (€3,059–€3,881/month), year-end bonus (8.3%), annual vacation pay (8%), pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave, commuting and home working allowances, and a 30% tax facility for international candidates.
