The European Doctoral School of Demography (EDSD) is now accepting applications for its 2026/2027 cohort, offering an intensive, 11-month scientific apprenticeship for aspiring demographers. This unique program is a collaboration between the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Germany and the SGH Warsaw School of Economics in Poland. EDSD is designed to provide young researchers with advanced training in mathematical and statistical demography, serving as a bridge for those about to start or currently enrolled in a PhD program.

The curriculum begins with a two-month preparatory phase in Rostock, Germany, focusing on programming, mathematics, and statistical modeling. This is followed by nine months in Warsaw, Poland, where students engage in fundamental demography courses, including mortality forecasting and simulation techniques. The program is delivered by leading international experts, ensuring exposure to the latest methodological advances and data sources, such as digital and computational demography.

EDSD is committed to accessibility: there are no tuition fees, and a limited number of full scholarships are available, offering a monthly stipend of approximately €1,650–€1,700. Upon completion, fellows receive the European Research Certificate of Demography, enhancing their credentials and professional network. The program is highly selective, admitting around 20 students per cohort.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree and have strong quantitative skills and a keen interest in population studies. The program is ideal for graduates in public health, computer science, and related fields who wish to master the quantitative tools necessary to analyze global population change.
