About this position
This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on developing timing-aware distributed supervisory controller synthesis methods for complex dynamical systems, such as semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The project addresses the challenges of scalability in supervisory controller synthesis, particularly the limitations of current decomposition approaches in manufacturing systems where control involves properties of manufactured goods. The research aims to go beyond traditional safety and progress properties by incorporating timing and performance optimization requirements into supervisory control models. The successful candidate will join the Supervisory Control group within the Control Systems Technology section of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, collaborating with a vibrant community of over 60 researchers. The position is part of a larger project, 'Holistic Design Automation for Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment,' involving six PhD students across mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and mathematics and computer science departments. Collaboration with ASML offers opportunities to apply research outcomes in an industrial context, enhancing both academic and industrial profiles. The role includes access to graduate courses at the Dutch Institute of Systems and Control (DISC) and opportunities for international collaboration. Supervision is provided by Dr. Ir. Michel Reniers and Dr. Ir. Martijn Goorden. The position offers a four-year full-time contract, competitive salary and benefits, and requires a master’s degree in a relevant field, strong analytical skills, and fluency in English. Applicants should be motivated to develop teaching skills and work in interdisciplinary teams. Applications must be submitted online and include a cover letter, CV, and references. The position remains open until filled, with a formal application deadline of November 2, 2025.
