About this position

The Laboratory of Energy Science and Engineering (LESE) at ETH Zurich, led by Senior Scientist and Lecturer Paula Abdala, is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join their research on structure–activity relationships in CO₂ capture materials. This project is part of the NCCR Separations program and aims to accelerate the discovery of next-generation CO₂ sorbents with significant climate impact.

The research combines material synthesis, advanced operando characterization techniques (including X-ray absorption, total scattering, and vibrational spectroscopy), and molecular modelling. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or Chemistry, and a keen interest in fundamental research with real-world applications in climate change mitigation.

This is a 100% funded PhD position based in Zurich, Switzerland, with employment conditions following ETH Zurich and Swiss federal guidelines. The start date is from May 2026.
