About this position

The Graduate School for Geoinformatics (GSGI) at the University of Münster offers a structured doctoral programme in the interdisciplinary field of geoinformatics. This programme is designed for students interested in advancing research on spatial data science, geospatial technologies, spatial intelligence, and situated computing. Geoinformation is a critical factor in modern decision-making, with applications spanning environmental and regional planning, transportation, logistics, telecommunication, and energy provision. The school aims to create an international centre of excellence for research on information integration, focusing on geospatial applications and locational reference as integration enablers.

The research programme welcomes doctoral researchers from diverse backgrounds, including geoinformatics, computer science, geography, ecology, mathematics, and information systems. The education and training are structured into six phases, each with specific milestones, and include a modular course programme equivalent to 30 ECTS credit points. Students benefit from an optional one-month training module and a six-month mobility measure with an external partner. The programme features innovative elements such as an annual international symposium organised by students, monthly virtual joint seminars, a vibrant visiting researcher programme, and targeted career development measures.

Graduates will acquire advanced knowledge at the frontier of geographic information science and at the interface with computer science, information systems, and geosciences. The curriculum emphasises specialised skills for acquiring, managing, integrating, and using geoinformation to solve critical problems in research and society. Core competencies include research methods, creative and critical thinking, decision-making, teamwork, presentation skills, practical experience, and multicultural competencies. The programme is taught in English, and international guest lecturers and projects with partners in Germany and abroad enrich the academic experience.

There are no tuition fees, but students must pay a semester contribution of approximately 330 EUR, which covers public transportation in Münster and throughout Germany. Living costs are estimated at a minimum of 1,000 EUR per month. While the Graduate School itself is not a funded project, some places may be accompanied by scholarships or research positions, depending on specific calls. Applicants must hold a Master's degree in a relevant field and provide proof of English proficiency (TOEFL 550 or equivalent). Applications are accepted at any time via the online portal. For further details on application procedures, funding, and living costs, consult the provided university links.
