The University of Bern is offering a PhD position focused on understanding how the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum acquires nutrients, with research conducted at the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine (IBMM). The project centers on parasite biology, membrane transport proteins, and structural biology, leveraging advanced techniques such as recombinant protein expression, protein purification, and cryo-EM. The IBMM is renowned for its multidisciplinary research in membrane biology, integrating chemical synthesis, chemical biology, electrophysiology, and computational biology to study membrane proteins in the context of human diseases.

Candidates should have a Master’s degree in biochemistry, molecular life sciences, or a related field, with laboratory experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, or similar disciplines. Experience with protein expression, purification, cryo-EM, or Plasmodium culture is highly valued. The ideal candidate will demonstrate autonomy, scientific curiosity, critical thinking, and strong English communication skills.
