About this position

Karolinska Institutet is offering a fully funded PhD position at the Center for Cervical Cancer Elimination in Flemingsberg, Stockholm. The research project focuses on developing advanced AI algorithms for risk-based cervical cancer screening by integrating HPV genotyping, screening history, and national registry data at the population level. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team at the Stockholm Medical Artificial Intelligence and Learning Environments (SMAILE) Core Facility, collaborating with epidemiologists, clinicians, data scientists, and bioinformaticians.

The doctoral project involves designing, training, and validating machine learning models, analyzing large-scale population datasets, and exploring both supervised and unsupervised ML methods to identify risk patterns. The long-term goal is to contribute to the elimination of cervical cancer in Sweden by informing future screening recommendations. The research group is internationally recognized for its work in HPV biology, vaccine innovation, and real-world preventive interventions, and leads Sweden's national efforts in cervical cancer prevention through a comprehensive quality registry.

Applicants should hold a master's degree in applied AI, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, computational data analysis, bioinformatics, computational biology, biomedical data science, or medical technology (AI/ML focus). Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required. Experience in applied machine learning projects is advantageous, as is knowledge in epidemiology, microbiology, medicine, or virology. The position is full-time for up to 4 years, with a contractual salary, access to fitness facilities, and reimbursement for medical care. The application deadline is April 20, 2026.

To apply, submit your application via the Varbi recruitment portal, including a personal letter, CV, degree certificates, transcripts, and documents demonstrating eligibility. Applications can be submitted in English or Swedish. For more information, contact Professor Joakim Dillner at [email protected].
