About this position

The Membrane and Interfacial Science Lab at ETH Zürich, within the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT), is offering a PhD position focused on membrane separations. The lab designs advanced materials and processes to enable more energy-efficient and sustainable separations, with research spanning membrane technologies for carbon capture, gas separations, and water purification. Researchers in the group engage in membrane synthesis, experimental characterization, and transport modeling, contributing to disruptive improvements in separation science.

The doctoral student will conduct research on next-generation membrane processes, including fabrication and characterization of nanoporous and polymeric materials, experimental evaluation of membrane performance in gas and liquid separations, and theoretical modeling of transport and energy efficiency. The project offers opportunities to interface with NCCR Separations and collaborate with world-leading experts in separations, sustainability, and materials science.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field. Strong written and oral communication skills in English, laboratory experience, and motivation to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and international research team are required. The position provides a competitive Rate 3 doctoral student salary, access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure, support for publishing in high-impact journals, and opportunities to present at major international conferences. ETH Zürich is committed to diversity, sustainability, and an inclusive culture, offering a collaborative and supportive work environment.

To apply, submit your application online via the ETH Zürich portal, including your CV, cover letter, names and contact information for three references, and academic transcripts (Bachelor’s and Master’s) with GPA and English translations. Evaluation of applications will begin on 13 March 2026 and continue until the position is filled. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
