Aalborg University is offering a fully funded, three-year PhD position in the field of migration, ageing, and integration. The position is part of the research project “Return or Belong? Retirement and Later-Life Integration among Non-Western Immigrants,” which investigates how retirement impacts social and political integration and the potential return migration of older non-Western immigrants in Denmark. The project utilizes unique Danish register and survey data to analyze these dynamics, focusing on social inclusion, political participation, and the challenges and opportunities faced by ageing immigrant populations.

The PhD student will join the Department of Society and Politics and the Centre for Comparative Welfare Studies (CCWS), engaging with strong research environments in sociology and political science. The position involves quantitative research, including developing research questions, conducting statistical analyses of longitudinal register data, and linking these with survey data where relevant. The student will contribute to international journal publications, present at conferences, and participate in research training and departmental activities. A three-month research stay at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) is planned as part of the project.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in a relevant social science discipline (e.g., sociology, economics, political science), strong quantitative and statistical skills, and experience with data analysis or survey research. Familiarity with Danish register data is an advantage. Proficiency in English is required, and knowledge of Danish or a related Nordic language is beneficial but not mandatory. The PhD thesis and project outputs will be in English. The position is fully funded, with salary and terms according to the Danish AC collective agreement, and includes research expenses and international collaboration opportunities.
