The Operations Management Research Group at KU Leuven, Belgium, invites applications for a full-time PhD position focused on data-driven methods for integrating human preferences and fairness considerations into scheduling processes. This research project aims to advance scheduling in contexts such as surgery, patient, or staff allocation by leveraging multi-objective optimization and machine learning approaches, with a particular emphasis on analyzing efficiency-fairness trade-offs. The position is supervised by Prof. Laura Maria Poreschack at the Research Centre for Operations Management, located on the Brussels and Leuven campuses.

The PhD position is designed to lead to a doctoral degree within four years. The initial contract is for one year, with the possibility of extension up to four years following a positive evaluation. The tentative starting date is 15 September 2026, subject to candidate availability. Applicants should have a master’s degree in Engineering, Business, Mathematics, Econometrics, or data/computer science, or a similar degree with equivalent academic level. A strong, mathematically-oriented academic background is essential, with knowledge of combinatorial optimization, scheduling problems, mathematical modelling, machine learning, and programming skills considered assets. Interest in supply chain management and data-driven methodologies is expected. Candidates must demonstrate independent research ability, excellent command of spoken and written English, and readiness to participate in seminars, international conferences, and teaching activities. Enrollment in the PhD program of the Faculty of Economics and Business is required, including 21 ECTS of coursework in the first year.
