About this position

The Laboratoire d’Annecy de Physique Théorique (LAPTh, CNRS/USMB) is offering a PhD position in the Astroparticle and Cosmology group, focusing on searches for dark matter and axion-like particles using radio observations. The research will leverage Galactic and extra-galactic data from MeerKAT and other radio telescopes to investigate signals from various particle dark matter candidates. The project sits at the intersection of particle physics and radio astronomy, providing a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge astroparticle physics and cosmology.

The PhD student will be supervised by Dr. Francesca Calore, with strong collaboration from Dr. P. D. Serpico and Prof. Geoff Beck (University of Witwatersrand, South Africa). The position is part of a Joint PhD program between CNRS and the University of Witwatersrand, aligning with both institutions’ strategic focus on astroparticle physics, dark matter phenomenology, and multi-wavelength indirect detection. Collaboration and visits to the partner university are expected during the PhD period.

LAPTh offers a vibrant research environment with access to computing resources, travel support, and active collaborations with the University of Geneva and CERN. The Astroparticle and Cosmology group conducts research on cosmic large-scale structure, cosmic microwave and infrared backgrounds, cross-correlations between cosmological datasets, early-Universe physics, cosmic rays and dark matter, gamma-ray astrophysics, and neutrino probes.

The appointment is expected to last three years, starting around October 1, 2026, with some flexibility. Applicants must have a Master of Science or equivalent in astrophysics or fundamental physics by the start date, with a strong background in particle physics and knowledge of astrophysics. Basic programming skills are required. Application materials include a motivation letter, CV, transcripts, master thesis (if completed), and at least one letter of recommendation submitted via AcademicJobsOnline. Applications received before April 25, 2026, will be given full priority, but the position remains open until filled. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a remote interview in May 2026.

For informal inquiries, contact Dr. Francesca Calore at [email protected]. More information about LAPTh and the Astroparticle and Cosmology group can be found at https://www.lapth.cnrs.fr and https://astrocosmolapth.com. Application link: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/31760.
