About this position

This PhD position at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) focuses on the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel switchable materials based on f-element valence change (VC) within rigid metal-organic framework (MOF) structures. The project aims to revolutionize the development of advanced functional materials by exploring the unique electronic configurations of f-element ions, which are crucial for technologies such as catalysts, magnets, and photonic devices. By constructing VC materials using MOFs, the research seeks to enable rapid and cooperative responses to external stimuli like temperature, pressure, and light, resulting in prompt changes in magnetic, electronic, or optical properties. These chameleonic materials are promising candidates for applications in memory devices, optoelectronics, and sensors, and may lead to entirely new multifunctional materials for advanced technologies.

The successful candidate will join a research group equipped with state-of-the-art diffraction instrumentation, including single-crystal electron and X-ray crystallography, and will utilize synchrotron facilities as central tools. The project is collaborative, involving partners from the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and École Polytechnique. Responsibilities include the detailed elucidation of atomic and electronic structures, physical property characterization, and active dissemination of results through scientific publications and international conferences.

Applicants should hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or equivalent in chemistry, with a strong emphasis on synthetic (inorganic) chemistry. Experience with air- and moisture-sensitive compounds and crystallography is advantageous. Candidates must be highly motivated, able to work independently, and proficient in English.

The position offers a three-year employment period, with salary and terms based on the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations' collective agreement. The starting date is September 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. DTU provides a dynamic international research environment, and all interested candidates are encouraged to apply regardless of background.

Applications must be submitted online by November 30, 2025, including a cover letter, CV with references, grade transcripts, and diplomas. For further information, contact Professor Kasper S.

What's required

Applicants must hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree, preferably in chemistry with a strong focus on synthetic (inorganic) chemistry. Experience with handling and manipulation of air- and moisture sensitive compounds and crystallography is advantageous. Candidates should be highly motivated, able to work independently, and confident in both written and spoken English. Scientific excellence, ambition, and the ability to work at the highest international level are expected. Applications must include a cover letter, CV with references, grade transcripts, and BSc/MSc diploma (in English) with official grading scale description. You may apply prior to obtaining your master's degree but cannot begin before having received it.

How to apply

Submit your complete online application by 30 November 2025 via the 'Apply now' link. Attach all required materials in English as a single PDF file, including cover letter, CV with references, grade transcripts, and diplomas. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
