Uppsala University is offering two fully funded PhD positions in the Department of Human Geography, with research areas in urban and housing research and political ecology. The positions begin on September 1, 2026, and are financed for four years as full-time employment. The doctoral program covers 240 university credits (4 years), including coursework and dissertation research. The department is recognized for its expertise in a wide range of human geography topics, including urban and regional planning, GIS, spatial analysis, and both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Position 1 focuses on housing and urban geography and is affiliated with the Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF). The selected candidate will conduct research related to housing and/or urban geography, following the doctoral curriculum of the Department of Human Geography. Position 2 is oriented toward political ecology, including feminist and decolonial perspectives, but applications for all types of political ecology projects are welcome.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in human geography or equivalent, or have completed at least 240 credits (with at least 60 at Master’s level and an independent project of at least 15 credits). These qualifications must be fulfilled by June 30, 2026. The application should include a cover letter, CV, research plan, transcripts, at least one academic writing sample, and contact information for two academic references. There is no need to contact potential supervisors in advance. Selection is based on submitted documents and interviews, with interviews planned for April 2026 and results communicated by mid-May 2026.

The positions are fully funded as full-time employment, with salary individually negotiated and social benefits included. Up to 20% of the time may be allocated to teaching or administrative duties. The employment is subject to Swedish Higher Education Ordinance regulations.
