Description

The University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) invites applications for multiple PhD positions in the Faculty of Humanities, Sports, and Educational Sciences, starting in spring 2026. These positions offer an exciting opportunity for motivated candidates to pursue doctoral research in a vibrant academic and social environment, with a focus on interdisciplinary approaches to knowledge development. The program is structured around three main fields: language, literature, and history; cultural studies, arts, and sports; and educational research, learning practices, and pedagogy. Each area provides a solid foundation for innovative research and professional development.

PhD candidates will join one of the faculty’s departments and research groups, contributing to a collaborative and inclusive work community. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary, professional, and work-oriented research, preparing graduates to be at the forefront of their fields both nationally and internationally. The doctoral training includes coursework, participation in research seminars, independent thesis research, engagement with research communities, dissemination activities, and a public defense. Opportunities are available to participate in USN’s research schools and to take courses in Norwegian.

Applicants must submit a scientifically grounded and feasible project proposal (maximum five pages) clearly indicating the relevant scientific area and intended research group affiliation. The application should also include certified degree certificates, an explanation of the grading system, a master's thesis, other relevant diplomas, documentation of English and Norwegian language skills (if required), any scientific publications, and contact information for up to three references. All documents must be in Scandinavian or English and certified. Applicants with foreign degrees must have their education approved by the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Competence before the deadline.

Qualification requirements include a master’s degree (120 ECTS credits) with a thesis of at least 30 credits, normally with an average grade of B or better. English fluency must be documented by a valid certificate (TOEFL IBT 90, IELTS 6.5, CAE/CPE, or PTE Academic 62), unless exempted by prior study or degree. Norwegian language proficiency is not required unless the project demands it. The position requires regular presence at the workplace during ordinary working hours, and the place of work will be agreed upon appointment.

PhD research fellows are employed for three years (research training) or four years with 25% career-promoting duties, depending on agreement with the Head of Department. The annual salary is NOK 550,800, with statutory contributions to the State Pension Fund and membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which provides pension, insurance, and loan schemes. The university offers career guidance, an ambitious work community, and an inclusive environment.

Applications will be evaluated by an expert committee based on formal qualifications, scientific quality and feasibility of the project, relevance to the program’s thematic and interdisciplinary profile, and desired research group affiliation. Relevant applicants will be invited to interview, and references will be obtained. Appointments are made in accordance with the Civil Service Act and relevant legislation.

USN is one of Norway’s largest higher education institutions, with approximately 18,000 students and 1,900 employees. The university is committed to collaborative problem-solving and societal impact, with campuses across three counties. USN values diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, and strives to shape future leaders and innovators. For more information and to apply, visit the application link provided.
