The Max Planck School of Cognition offers a prestigious, fully-funded PhD programme based in Leipzig, Germany, with affiliated universities and research institutions across Germany, London, and Nijmegen. This four-year doctoral programme is designed for outstanding international applicants from diverse academic backgrounds, aiming to bridge the gaps between disciplines such as artificial intelligence, biology, cognitive neuroscience, genetics, linguistics, mathematics, neurobiology, neuroimaging, neurology, neurophysics, philosophy, physics, psychiatry, and psychology.

The programme begins with a one-year orientation period, featuring intensive teaching and laboratory rotations in three different labs among the fellows of the Max Planck School of Cognition. These rotations allow candidates to explore various research groups, helping them define their research interests and select the laboratory for their doctoral research. The first year also includes e-learning courses covering essential topics and in-person Cognition Academies, which are held every third month in different locations across Germany. At the end of the first year, candidates undergo an evaluation before advancing to the research phase.

During the research phase (years two to four), doctoral candidates collaborate with their supervisors to develop a feasible and relevant project proposal, which is presented to a thesis advisory committee. Upon approval, candidates begin their research project. Doctoral degrees are awarded by the university affiliated with the candidate's supervisor at the end of the programme.

The programme is multidisciplinary and international, featuring guest lecturers, intercultural training, and collaborations with partners in Germany and abroad. Students benefit from a supportive environment, including welcome events, buddy programmes, tutors, and assistance with visa matters. The school provides unique opportunities for lab rotations across its network of partner institutions, fostering interdisciplinary expertise in cognition.

Admission requirements include a completed Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in a related field, with at least 60 ECTS or 30 equivalent credits in relevant subjects, as well as solid English language skills (B2 level). The programme is fully funded, with no tuition fees or semester contributions, and offers comprehensive financial support for all doctoral studies.
