The Joint Research Academy in Biomedical Engineering and Science of Hearing and Sensory Systems (JRA) is a collaborative doctoral programme offered by the University of Oldenburg, Hannover Medical School, and Leibniz Universität Hannover, under the DFG-funded Cluster of Excellence 'Hearing4all'. This interdisciplinary programme is designed for graduates in physics, biology, neuroscience, psychology, biomedical engineering, computer science, and related fields, aiming to advance research in neurosensory science, hearing research, communication technology, and auditory rehabilitation.

Doctoral candidates engage in a structured, three-year research project within one of the research groups of the 'Hearing4all' cluster, supported by a curriculum that enhances both scientific expertise and personal competencies. The curriculum covers three main areas: specific scientific knowledge (including courses such as 'Clinic, Diagnostic and Therapy of Peripheral and Central Hearing Disorders', 'Introduction to Biomaterials, Laser Spectroscopy and Microelectronics', and 'Fundamentals in Auditory Physiology'), communication competences (presentation techniques, language skills, and knowledge transfer), and interdisciplinary/transferable skills (data management, statistics, scientific writing, grant proposal writing, and career development).

International elements include guest lecturers, collaborative projects, and language training. Students benefit from summer schools, conferences, and research stays, fostering professional networks in the global hearing research community. The programme is supported by mentoring, career coaching, and buddy programmes, with dedicated international offices at each university providing comprehensive support for international doctoral candidates.

Admission requires a Master's degree in a relevant field and English proficiency (assessed during interview or via certificate/supervisor confirmation). Applicants must already hold a scholarship or be employed at one of the participating universities. There are no tuition fees, but semester contributions (approx. 360–416 EUR) apply, which include public transport. Living costs are estimated at 850–900 EUR per month.
