This PhD project at The Open University invites applicants to propose original research within the broad fields of human rights law and/or migration law. The program is designed for distance learning, allowing candidates to study remotely while receiving support from supervisors Dr. Neil Graffin and Dr. Róise Connolly through online video-conferencing and other digital feedback mechanisms. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop their own research agenda, drawing on a wide range of legal research methods, including doctrinal, socio-legal, historical, comparative, critical legal studies, and feminist legal theory approaches. The initial phase of the PhD will focus on familiarizing the candidate with key theoretical debates and discussions in human rights and migration law, before moving on to an in-depth exploration of their chosen topic. Both desk-based and empirical research approaches are welcome. Dr. Neil Graffin brings expertise in human rights, immigration, and asylum law, while Dr. Róise Connolly's research interests include healthcare law, medical patent law, and human rights law, with a particular focus on access to diagnosis and gendered experiences. The project is housed within the Faculty of Business and Law at The Open University, a leading UK institution known for its flexible, distance-learning programs. While the position does not currently offer funding, it provides a unique opportunity for self-motivated students to engage in advanced legal research with expert supervision.
