About this position
This fully funded PhD studentship offers a unique opportunity to combine advanced research with practitioner-based experience in elite football, in partnership with Brentford Football Club and Cardiff Metropolitan University. The project focuses on using data science and analytics to support and optimize the performance of Premier League football players. Successful candidates will engage in both academic research and applied practice, assisting in the delivery of Brentford FC's performance strategy for senior squads and potentially younger age groups.
The studentship includes a three-year bursary plus tuition fees at the UK rate, with a stipend of £21,805 for 2026/27, in line with RCUK rates. The doctoral stipend will be updated annually according to RCUK guidelines. The research will involve planning and completing a PhD programme related to football performance, engaging in applied sport and coaching science training, and supporting club-based performance activities such as data collection, management, analysis, performance testing, and reporting. Attendance at games and training camps may be required.
The project aims to establish a theoretically informed approach to maximizing the use of complex data in elite football, identifying key areas to optimize performance outcomes. Candidates will have access to high-quality studies and practitioner duties, gaining valuable experience in both research and applied settings. The ideal applicant will have a strong academic track record relevant to the research area, experience in applied performance settings (preferably football), and practitioner knowledge in data science, analytics, sports science, coaching science, strength and conditioning, or fitness.
Applicants must hold a good BSc (Hons) in a relevant field, with a postgraduate qualification desirable. Demonstrated activity towards accreditation in a professional body related to data science/analytics or sport and exercise science is expected. Personal attributes such as adaptability, excellent communication skills, effective time management, teamwork, and flexibility are essential. Experience conducting applied research in football or other elite sports is highly valued.
To apply, submit your CV, cover letter, and research proposal via the Brentford FC careers portal. The proposal should align with the research theme, include a brief literature review, and outline the studies you would propose to address the PhD focus. Applicants invited to interview will need to provide degree certificates, transcripts, and evidence of relevant qualifications. Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr Ryland Morgans at Cardiff Metropolitan University. The application deadline is March 25, 2026, with first stage interviews likely the week commencing April 20, 2026.
This studentship is ideal for candidates seeking to advance their expertise in data-driven sports science and coaching within a Premier League football environment, supported by leading academic and practitioner mentors.
