PhD Stipend in Ecological Modelling of Invasive Insects at Aalborg University Aalborg University in Denmark

Aalborg University in Denmark is offering a fully funded PhD stipend in Ecological Modelling of Invasive Insects, based at the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience. This opportunity is ideal for candidates with a strong background in biology, ecology, and data analysis, particularly those interested in the population dynamics and ecological impact of invasive insect species. The research will focus on modelling species distributions and population dynamics of invasive insects, such as the agricultural pest Spotted Wing Drosophila, under current and future climate scenarios. The project will involve mechanistic distribution models, experimental data on environmental tolerances, and microclimate modelling to predict distributions and seasonal population dynamics.

The successful candidate will participate in all aspects of the project, including data acquisition, experimental work, modelling, data analysis, and scientific writing. The project can be tailored to the candidate’s interests and expertise. The PhD student will also engage in teaching and project-based student supervision within the section, following Aalborg University's Problem Based Learning approach. The position is for three years, starting from August 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in biology or a related field, strong competences in ecology, excellent analytical skills, and proficiency in R or equivalent programming languages. Experience in insect ecology, species distribution modelling, population dynamics, or thermal eco-physiology is advantageous. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required. The candidate is expected to complete PhD courses (30 ECTS), gain teaching experience, and undertake a 4-6 month research stay abroad, likely in Australia or France.

The EcoClimate Modelling research group within the Section of Functional Ecology and Genomics will host the PhD student.
