About this position

The Jožef Stefan Institute, Slovenia’s leading scientific research institution, is offering a fully funded PhD position in Intelligent Orchestration within the Department of Communication Systems and SensorLab. This opportunity is based in Ljubljana, a vibrant city known for its quality of life and proximity to both ski resorts and the Adriatic Sea.

The research focuses on developing device and input agnostic communication and computation scenarios, enabling humans to architect personalized digital spaces with customized software assistants (such as GPTs or Personas) and diverse input devices (including home speaker systems, touch pads, and holographic projections). The project aims to identify and address network and computation orchestration challenges, analyze state-of-the-art neuro-symbolic AI advancements, and propose a theoretical framework for zero-touch orchestration using neuro-symbolic formalism.

As a PhD student, you will conduct original scientific research, publish in high-impact journals and conferences, complete coursework as outlined in the PhD program, and contribute to project activities and scientific dissemination. The position offers a gross salary of approximately 39,600 € per year (~3,300 €/month), covers tuition fees, and provides eligibility for accommodation with subventions at the Dormitory for Postgraduate students. Additional bonuses for good performance may be available.

Applicants must hold an MSc degree or equivalent in computer science, electrical engineering, physics, or mathematics. Required skills include analytic thinking, proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language (Python, Matlab, Javascript, C++, etc.), and a good command of English. Experience with data analytics, code development, communication networks, or embedded systems is advantageous.

The Jožef Stefan Institute is renowned for its excellence in basic and applied research, technology transfer, and collaborations with industry and start-ups. The SensorLab group offers a world-class international research environment, opportunities for publication, specialized training, and connections to deep tech start-ups. Flexible working hours and a supportive academic community make this an ideal setting for ambitious researchers.

To apply, submit a cover letter describing your motivation, research interests, and relevant experience, a detailed CV, a digital copy of your BSc/MSc certificate, and optionally a link to a recent relevant project (e.g., GitHub repository) or publication to [email protected]. Applications are accepted until the position is filled, with the study year starting in October. For further details, visit the project page.
