About this position
The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) is a leading research center dedicated to advancing knowledge and innovation in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Recognized as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence, ICN2 offers a vibrant, international research environment with state-of-the-art facilities and a commitment to training the next generation of scientists.
The Supramolecular NanoChemistry and Materials Group (NANOUP) at ICN2 focuses on the supramolecular assembly of molecules, biomolecules, and nanoscale building blocks to design novel functional architectures and devices. The group is currently seeking a motivated PhD student to join the project "Clip-off Chemistry in Organic Synthesis: a new approach for the synthesis of organic macrocycles, cages, catenanes and polymers (CLIP-ORGANIC)," funded by the Generación de Conocimiento National Project (AEI).
Over four years, the successful candidate will design, synthesize, and characterize new reticular materials (COFs) and use them as precursors for generating new polymers via clip-off chemistry. This position offers hands-on experience in supramolecular, reticular, and organic chemistry, as well as nanotechnology, with access to a wide range of advanced characterization techniques. The research will be conducted in a highly international atmosphere, supported by the expertise of the NANOUP team.
Eligibility requirements include a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Nanochemistry, or Materials Science, and a Master's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Nanotechnology. Candidates should have experience in organic and/or coordination chemistry and porosity measurements, and possess strong English language, communication, and writing skills. Personal attributes such as motivation, commitment, responsibility, and independence are highly valued.
The position is full-time (37.5 hours/week) and temporary for four years, based in Bellaterra (Barcelona). Salary is competitive and based on qualifications and experience. Additional benefits include support for relocation, life insurance, flexible work schedules, 28 holidays per year, a flexible compensation plan (with tax advantages for health insurance, childcare, and training), and access to training activities such as language courses, mentoring, and wellbeing programs.
Applications are accepted year-round and are reviewed continuously. To apply, candidates must submit a cover letter, a full CV with contact details, and two reference letters or referee contacts via the ICN2 website. ICN2 is committed to equal opportunities and diversity, including the inclusion of people with disabilities.
